Good Shepherd Services : Donate : Walk

Frank Ryan: “It’s our responsibility to lend a helping hand.”

Frank Ryan has been a member of the Good Shepherd Services Board since 1988 and began his term as Board Chairman in 2008. During his tenure at the Center, Ryan has exemplified the American Dream to persevere against hardship and achieve his goals both personally and professionally. After losing his father at a young age, he found love and gained strength from his family which propelled him to become successful in all aspects of his life and those lives around him. A Marine, a businessman, and a volunteer are just a few of the words that can be used to describe Ryan. After working full-time to pay for his own education, Ryan successfully graduated 1st in his class (summa cum laud) from Mt. Saint Mary’s College with a BS in economics. He also completed a 24 month MBA graduate program in just 10 months and became a Pennsylvania Certified Accountant the first time he took the test. After his successful years of schooling, he joined the Marine Corps and served for a combined total of 33 years. During his service, Ryan traveled the world assisting in some of the most well-known and successful military operations including Operation Enduring Freedom. Due to his exemplary service, he was awarded a Bronze Star during his time in Iraq, 3 Legions of Merit, a Defense Meritorious Service Medal for Operation Enduring Freedom, and the Catholic Medal of Honor during his time in Sierra Leone, Africa. As a business man, Ryan has been the corporate officer of several publically traded corporations and served on the Board of Directors of eight different companies. He founded the F.X. Ryan & Associates management consulting firm which specialized in crisis management, strategic planning, and business process redesign. In other words, F.X. Ryan & Associates assists companies in avoiding bankruptcy. Ryan is fully committed to helping others on both a financial and personal level. Along with his tenure as a Board Member of Good Shepherd Services, Ryan has served as a Board member of a large inner city hospital and has also worked with the St. Agnes Hospital Foundation to expand their charitable services to the disadvantaged Baltimore population.

Due to his passion and love for the mission of Good Shepherd Services, Ryan will embark on the Walk Across America for Our Children. At a daily average of about 32 miles a day, Ryan will walk approximately 3,200 miles across the country in just 100 days to raise awareness and money for the children at Good Shepherd Services. Ryan hopes to raise $3 million for Good Shepherd. Once completed, this will make Ryan the third oldest man (at the age of 63 years) to complete a walk across the United States.

When? & Where?

Frank will start his journey in San Diego, CA on March 15, 2014 and end in Ocean City, MD on July 1, 2014.

Why?

The Walk Across America For The Children is an awareness and fundraising event to benefit Good Shepherd Services. Over the years, the clinical challenges of treating the children has increased significantly; a sad reflection of our societal needs. Combined with the clinical challenge, Good Shepherd faces a continuous fiscal test due to the ever-tightening model of state reimbursement which requires that we fund our own capital expenses and any additional care that the children may need but the state will not reimburse.

Training Walk

On Saturday, July 27, 2013, Ryan, along with Good Shepherd Services President, Dr. Derrick Boone, other key staff and Board Members participated in a 13 mile training walk to Kick-Off the Walk Across America. The Walk began at Fort McHenry and ended at Good Shepherd Services with stops at the Baltimore Basilica and Ryan’s childhood home near the intersection of Edmondson Ave and Lyndhurst St.
